Japan ‘tankan’ business survey shows optimism over recovery

A quarterly survey by the Bank of Japan shows business sentiment has improved sharply with expectations that the economy is recovering from a year-long recession.

The BOJ’s “tankan” released Monday reported rebounds in all categories, both manufacturing and nonmanufactuing companies, large and small. It was a marked improvement from the past several quarterly reports as Japan battled the coronavirus pandemic.

The main measure of business conditions of large manufacturers rose to minus 10 from minus 27, while business sentiment among large non-manufacturers such as service industries rose to minus 5 from minus 12. The actual results were better than forecast.

The tankan measures corporate sentiment by subtracting the number of companies saying business conditions are negative from those responding they are positive.

In the summer, sentiment plunged to its lowest level in more than a decade as the pandemic crushed exports and tourism, mainstays for the world’s third largest economy.

Japan business sentiment improves as economy emerges from pandemic’s hit – BOJ survey

By Leika Kihara and Kaori Kaneko

TOKYO, Dec 14 (Reuters)Japanese business sentiment improved for the second straight quarter in October-December, a key central bank survey showed on Monday, a welcome sign for the economy as it continued to emerge from the initial hit of the coronavirus pandemic.

But companies slashed their capital expenditure plans for the year ending in March, as a recent resurgence of infections reinforce expectations any recovery in the world’s third-largest economy will be fragile.

The headline index for big manufacturers’ sentiment improved to minus 10 in December from minus 27 in September, the Bank of Japan’s closely watched “tankan” survey showed. It compared with a median market forecast for a reading of minus 15.

Big non-manufacturers’ sentiment also recovered to minus 5 from minus 12 in September, roughly matching a Reuters poll of minus 6, the survey showed.

Big firms plan to cut

JC Penney, 1 of the oldest retailers in SC, looks past bankruptcy | Business

It didn’t get much ink in the mainstream business press, but J.C. Penney last week closed the latest chapter in its 118-year history, one that it would just as soon forget.

The long-struggling department store chain exited from a nearly seven-month stint in the shackles of bankruptcy protection and is heading into the back stretch of the holiday shopping season with new owners, fewer stores, less debt and a renewed sense of optimism.

“Today is an exciting day for our company, as we have accomplished our goal of putting J.C. Penney on a secure path for the future as a private company so that we can continue to serve our loyal customers,” CEO Jill Soltau said in a prepared statement Monday.

The food industry said it was “just bonkers” that UK businesses did not know what the trading conditions would be in 12 working days’ time.

Ian Wright, chief executive of the Food and Drink Federation, said the threat of tariffs “was not a trivial thing” and if the UK left the EU with a trade deal on 1 January consumers could expect to see price rises of between 5% and 15% in the supermarkets from mid-January.

“I know some of our members are planning to send out new portfolio price lists to their customers this week to take account of tariffs.

Amid frustration and disbelief among prominent business people that a deal has still not been secured, consumer groups, universities, farmers and both large and small retailers said a deal was essential to allow them to cope with the impacts of Brexit, even with a deal in place. Some simply called on ministers to be honest about the impact of no deal.

Businesses said they were still finding issues over their Brexit readiness with the transition period
