During the shooting of Pirates of the Caribbean, special effects and lighting crews discovered that the combination of high humidity and high temperatures were very destructive to their equipment. They experienced repeated electrical and electronic failures due to corrosion. Once they began using ACF-50, their corrosion problems were a thing of the past. In short, ACF-50 saved them a great deal of time and money.
During the shooting of WaterWorld, special effects and lighting crews discovered that the combination of high humidity and high temperatures on the Big Island of Hawaii were very destructive to their equipment. They experienced repeated electrical and electronic failures due to corrosion. According to one crewmember, once they began using Corrosion Block their corrosion problems were a thing of the past. They used it on all of their electrical connections ashore as well as on the floating set. They sprayed it on all of their brass propane connections as well as inside their hand-held radios and had excellent results. In short, Corrosion Block saved them a great deal of time and money.
Special effects and lighting crews on the set of Titanic used Corrosion Block to fight the ravages of salt water on their equipment and were very impressed with its performance. With thousands of electrical connections, light bulbs, lamps, diffusers and delicate electronic equipment being subjected to the worst corrosion environment imaginable, Corrosion Block proved its worth. The production crew estimates that for every dollar they spent on Corrosion Block, they realized a savings of $21.50 in damaged or destroyed equipment. Plus, the amount of time the crew spent on daily maintenance was significantly reduced.
Arinc Research Corporation and the U.S. Army Aviation Service Command tested several corrosion preventive compounds on Army helicopters. The final result? ACF-50 was the product of choice for the U.S. Army. The final report says
Thinned ultrathin WDC's [water displacing compounds] and ACF-50 are the only products that can be used on electrical connectors. There has recently been some concern over the use of thinned ultrathin WDC's on engine electrical connectors. … Thin WDC's, such as MIL-C-85054, dry to a hard finish, so they cannot be applied to moving parts. Also this WDC can act as a thermal insulator and can cause hot spots on drivetrain components. The report also says
The MIL-C081309 family of products, including ACF-50, proved to be all-purpose WDCs, performing well on a variety of components. The Type III and ACF-50, both of which can be applied to the inside of electrical connectors, were extremely beneficial in solving intermittent electrical contact problems on the aircraft. These products also worked to prevent corrosion of components exposed to the environment…. Because ACF-50 meets the requirements for MIL-C-81309 Types II and III, it has the advantage of nearly universal application.
AMH1 Rily Suiter applies ACF-50 to the horizontal stabilizer using the 8' stainless steel wand at Jacksonville Naval Air Station.
The United States Navy operates in one of the most corrosive environments in the world. In 1996, the United States Navy prototyped ACF-50 on an ES-3A Shadow and found that after one year in service (seven months of that deployment were spent at sea), the overall incidence of corrosion had been reduced 47%! Subsequently we completed a partial implementation on 16 S-3B Viking aircraft which verified the 1996 test results. Read the full report.
ACF-50 is currently in use on the entire fleet of U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules Aircraft. Read the Coast Guard's ACF-50 application procedures manual.
INTELLIKEY™ creates the most advanced access control system available today. Designed around state-of-the-art electronics, their system features computers in both the controller and the key. These two computers exchange access information with each other, make decisions relating to access, and keep records of their activities. INTELLIKEY™ requires the use of Corrosion Block on their cylinders. Failure to use Corrosion Block, or use of any other lubricant, voids their warranty. INTELLIKEY™ knows that only Corrosion Block can safely and completely protect both the mechanical and the electronic components of their system.
